This lesson covers water quality testing using physical and chemical indicators as well as biological indicators. First, eight parameters associated with the Water Quality Index (pH, conductivity, temperature, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, nitrates, phosphates, e. Coli) are defined along with optimal ranges for each parameter. The lesson can be paused for water quality testing using these parameters, or the test can be done at the end of the lesson. The rest of the water quality story is told by biological monitoring. This lesson focuses specifically on biological monitoring using macroinvertabrates (the Biotic Index). A detailed interactive example is provided.
