Using river & lake invertebrates and other techniques to assess water quality in Britain and Ireland

Using river & lake invertebrates and other techniques to assess water quality in Britain and Ireland

The Loughs Agency undertakes river water sampling on a routine basis within the Foyle and Carlingford hydrological catchments. The biological and chemical monitoring of freshwaters assists in determining the concentration of harmful pollutants in the aquatic environment. This pollution monitoring has several key objectives:
1. to identify potential threats to fish health and aquatic ecosystems;
2. to inform the public about the quality of the aquatic environment and to raise public awareness of environmental issues;
3. to provide inputs into policy-making decisions;
4. to assess the efficacy of pollution control measures;
5. to identify trends in pollution and to identify future problems.

The following chemical parameters are analysed in the Loughs Agency laboratory:
• Ammonia (NH3)
• Total Phosphorus (PO4)
• Total Suspended Solids (TSS)
• Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD5)

Each of the 105 sites is sampled to assess for biological indicators using the 3 minute kick sampling method. A sample is obtained from the watercourse and stored in a plastic container for subsequent laboratory analysis. Staff at the laboratory then undertake detailed macro invertebrate identification and record the results for subsequent determination of a BMWP score to indicate the level of water quality.

Thinking of Buying a Non-Backwashing Water Filtration System? Think Again.

Thinking of Buying a Non-Backwashing Water Filtration System? Think Again.

MYTH: Backwashing (or self-cleaning) water filtration systems waste water. FACT: Backwash water is filtered and can easily be used to water plants or side yards, or simply run off into a pool, pond, or even for livestock or horses. Zero waste! Most importantly, backwashing is required to reduce and eliminate bacteria, increase your filter’s life and reduce your cost of replacement, and ensure 99%+ effectiveness of removing toxins for the filter’s life. According to studies (see below), non-backwashing systems are less than 36% effective at removing toxins.

How to Install a Whole House Water Filter

How to Install a Whole House Water Filter

Watch the full episode: https://www.thisoldhouse.com/watch/ask-toh-water-filter-fire-pit

Ask This Old House plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey improves the taste and odor of municipal drinking water with a whole house filtration system that includes a sediment filter and a granulated activated carbon filter.

Click here to SUBSCRIBE to the official This Old House YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thisoldhouse

Time: 2-3 hours

Cost: ,000

Skill Level: Moderate

Tools List:
Tubing Cutter
Fitting Brush/Pipe Cleaner
Torch

Shopping List:
Whole House Filtration System
Copper Pipe and Fittings
3 Copper Ball Valves
Adapter Fittings to Connect Filters
Flux
Solder
Thread Sealing Tape

Steps:
1. Turn off the main plumbing supply to the house and drain as much water as possible from the pipes by opening all faucets and fixtures and then opening a drawoff valve near the main.
2. Determine the location of the prefilter. If necessary, attach a piece of plywood for attaching the filter bracket.
3. Use a tubing cutter to cut in to the main water supply pipe.
4. Clean, apply flux, and solder the adapter fittings to transition into the filter housing on a workbench to keep the heat away from the filter. Once cool, connect the adapter fittings to the filter housing, using thread sealing tape on threaded connections.
5. Clean, flux, and then dryfit the remaining connections. Include “T” fittings that allow water into and out of the filter, but also connect to a shutoff valve that serves as a bypass. Include a shutoff valve for water entering the filter and a shutoff valve for water leaving the filter.
6. In normal operation, the bypass valve remains in the closed position and the two filter valves are in the open position. If the filter requires service, those valves should be reversed, allowing untreated water into the building temporarily.
7. Once all connections have been made, turn water pressure back on to the building and check for leaks.
8. Follow manufacturer instructions to properly activate the carbon filter.

Water Quality Worldwide

Water Quality Worldwide

Ahead of World Water Day, Gallup examines how satisfied the world’s citizens are with the quality of their water and finds that people in sub-Saharan African nations are the least likely to be satisfied with their water’s quality.

Water Quality and Wastewater Treatment, Environmental Engineering Graduate Student Coy McNew

Water Quality and Wastewater Treatment, Environmental Engineering Graduate Student Coy McNew

The overall goal of graduate student Coy McNew’s Ph.D. Research at Vanderbilt University is to gain a better understanding into the behavior of engineered nanomaterials (ENM) in the subsurface environment, including an increased understanding of the retention of these potential pollutants in porous media. This should lead to improved means of water and wastewater treatment containing ENM and subsequently, increased public health – as well as a better understanding of the risk these ENM may pose to other biological systems in the natural environment
Coy works under the direction of Dr. Gene LeBoeuf in the Vanderbilt University School of Engineering, and is pursuing his Ph.D. In Environmental Engineering.
The unique physicochemical properties of engineered nanomaterials (ENM) make them attractive for application in a number of advanced technologies; however, these same properties raise concerns about their impacts to ecosystems and human health. With the impending mass production and increased number of applications of these ENM, there will be ample opportunities for the ENM to enter the natural environment. Several studies have predicted the possible toxicity of aqueous ENM aggregates to biological systems and in order to minimize the risk of these possible contaminants we must improve our understanding of the fate and transport of these particles in the natural environment. Coy’s research looks at how these ENM interact with different types of natural organic matter (NOM) that are ubiquitous in the subsurface environment. By using a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) I can directly measure the deposition and subsequent detachment of these ENM onto bare silica surfaces as well as surfaces altered by adsorbed NOM. In doing so, I can investigate what roles the fundamental structure and physicochemical properties of this attached phase, or adsorbed, NOM play on the attachment and detachment of ENM.
